Film Locations

"We all know that Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer starred in “The Sound of Music,” but Salzburg, Austria, played a commanding role, too. Fans can visit many locations from the Best Picture of 1965, including Nonnberg Abbey, Leopoldskron Palace, Frohnburg Palace and Hellbrunn Palace. Maria and the children sang "Do-Re-Mi" at the Mirabell Gardens in Salzburg, with Hohenwerfen Castle providing the backdrop."-Robin Dalmas

"San Francisco and the nearby environs star prominently in Alfred Hitchcock’s heart-thumping 1958 thriller “Vertigo,” from Scottie’s (Jimmy Stewart) apartment on Lombard Street to Cypress Point at Pebble Beach, where Scottie and Madeleine (Kim Novak) share their first kiss. Yet it’s the Golden Gate National Recreation Area that leaves an indelible impression: It’s here that Scottie rescues Madeleine after she jumps into San Francisco Bay."-Dalmas
“The Lord of the Rings,” J.R.R. Tolkien’s 2001-2003 trilogy about hobbits, dwarves, elves and wizards doing battle with evil incarnate, plays out in epic fashion in New Zealand. Moviegoers were so impressed with the film location that Kiwi tourism has skyrocketed in recent years. Visitors can still see the stand-in for Hobbiton in Matamata, the double for Rivendell in Kaitoke Regional Park and the opening snowcapped mountain shot of “The Two Towers” at Mount Tasman."-Dalmas
"Planning a trip to Rome? Watch “Roman Holiday” (1953) for a sneak preview of the attractions. It’s all here: the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, the Colosseum. While you’re exploring Rome in virtual fashion, you can take in the sweet story of an American newspaper reporter (Gregory Peck) who has the good fortune of discovering a rebellious princess (Audrey Hepburn) asleep on a park bench in the Via dei Fori Imperiali."-Dalmas

“Dances with Wolves” swept the Oscars in 1991 with seven statues, including a Best Director award for Kevin Costner. It also put the sweeping hills of South Dakota on the radar for filmgoers everywhere. Lt. John Dunbar (Kevin Costner) makes friends with the wolf Two Socks, befriends a Sioux tribe and falls in love with Stands With a Fist in locations such as Fort Pierre, Spearfish Canyon and Badlands National Park."-Dalmas
